Let Your Soul Dance | Soul Expression Jewelry

"Dance is the hidden language of the soul, of the body." – Martha Graham

Dance has been a lifelong love of mine. I cannot imagine my life without music and dance. I have been told that I responded to music by moving my body as soon as I heard it, before I could even stand. There are many videos out there showing young children moving innately to music. Music and dance are ancient, primal, forms of human expression.

In this blog, I discuss how dance relates to life, enables you to connect with your body, and is a medium of soul expression.

Dance is Life

I started taking ballet at the age of three, and continued until I was almost sixteen. Over the course of my life, I have had training in ballet, flamenco, bellydance, and fusion versions of these styles. I intend to continue dancing and taking classes as long as I am able. There is always something new to discover with respect to moving your body.

I read an article last year about a dance teacher who was still teaching in her nineties! When asked what she attributed her longevity to she said, garlic, stretching, and a movement practice every day. That sounds like a great plan to me...including the garlic! ;) I have always believed that if you don't move it, you lose it.

The dance world has evolved and expanded so much since I began taking lessons. Dance is reflecting life. There is much more diversity now. Expressing your soul's unique essence in the world is being encouraged. The "Age of Aquarius" energy that we are now in is in alignment with this. It is central to Aquarian energy to be true to who YOU are.

I wrote a blog about the shift in energy to the "Age of Aquarius"  . Click the link to read more about it.

A Dance Visionary

Martha Graham is considered to have been a ground-breaking visionary in the world of dance for her time. She has been called “the mother of modern dance.” She developed a non-traditional style of movement and expression. She saw movement as a language that enabled human beings to express their inner world of emotion outwards (i.e., joy, fear, desire etc.).  The dancer is a story in motion. The following quote expresses her belief.

"There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique, and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium, and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, not how it compares with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open." - Martha Graham

This is a powerful dance quote that speaks to life in general. Whether energy is called life force, or soul, they are similar references. I believe that as we journey through life, the experiences we encounter give us opportunities to fully embody different aspects of our essence. Life calls us to express our essence, in any given moment, in whatever way we feel moved to do so. Dance is a medium for experiencing the expression of our soul.

Holding ourselves back from expressing our soul is denying the beautiful truth of our existence. Shining our unique light is a beacon for others to do the same. Dance is a way to keep the channel to our soul open, and energy flowing from it.  There are many ways to do this, dance is one of them. Any creative pursuit has the potential to do this for us.

Connect to Your Body

Dance enables us to connect to, and realize, the amazing power of our bodies. Dance movement develops muscles that often, prior to dancing, we did not know existed. As our bodies and our core grows stronger this radiates throughout our entire being.

I have seen many people develop a greater confidence as their bodies develop in strength. When our body and soul are in tune with each other they move in harmony. Movement is a liberating form of physical, and soul therapy. It assists with getting blocked energy flowing. This is felt in the mind, body, and soul. I love the sacred reverence that Martha Graham has for the body. She expresses it in the quote below.

"The body is a sacred garment. It's your first and last garment; it is what you enter life in and what you depart life with, and it should be treated with honor." - Martha Graham

Our body is our temple. Like our souls, our bodies are unique to us. There is magnificent, divine, beauty in that. For far too long, society has judged bodies (especially women’s) on what they look like, and compared them to ridiculous standards of what is "ideal". As in life, the dance world has expanded its outlook. Forms of dance that have imposed exclusive criteria for dancers have begun to open up. Bias towards body shape and size, gender, race, and age etc. are elitist barriers. They are limiting to dance as an art form, and to the greater potential of humanity. As we progress further into the "Age of Aquarius", hopefully inclusivity for all will become rooted within dance and society.

Online Dance Classes

I highly recommend taking any type of dance class if you never have. Although we are still in the midst of the pandemic, there are many online dance options that are both live and pre-recorded. You can dance in the comfort of your own home. All you need is an internet connection.  A pre-recorded class enables you to do it whenever you choose, and at your own pace. It is wonderful that you can learn to dance, or continue to dance, no matter where you live!
Everyone has their own preferences on what dance styles appeal to them. Once you begin dancing your preferences can transform and evolve over time. If you are interested in finding a class for yourself, I suggest doing some research on the internet. Instagram is a great place for this. Search under different dance hashtags and you are bound to find posts that will lead you in the right direction.

Express Your Soul

Dance is a form of fun, fitness, soul expression, and emotional release. Everyone will relate to the experience of dance in their own way.  No matter what style of dance someone takes (and specific technique they learn), as per Martha Graham, everyone's unique expression will be apparent when they dance. That is the beauty and magic of the art form.

The act of adorning is an ancient ritual in preparation for a special ceremony, practice, activity etc. I enjoy dressing up a bit when I take a dance class, or practice, whether I am going out for it, or doing it at home. It is a way that I further embody the moment I am in.  Adornment comes naturally to me because of my background in image consulting and in the jewelry business. Wearing clothes and accessories that make you feel good gives you an energetic boost. There is truth in the notion when you look good, you feel better.

Below is a photo of me from a creative dance I performed with isis wings. It was inspired by the mythical phoenix bird who has the magical power to rise reborn from its ashes. With each new life the phoenix rises more empowered from its experiences. Dance has always been one of my favourite ways to express my soul. It has added much to my life. If you haven't taken a dance class before it is worth a try! You may discover something YOU love. There is much to be gained when you free your soul and let it dance❤️

Are you a lover of dance? Are there any classes that you love, or would like to try? Please share in the comments below what you love about dance and how it has impacted your life in a positive way.

With love + soul,

 I hope you dance…”
